The SI output on a battery charger stands for “Start Interrupt” or “Starter battery”. It is an extra, secondary output available on some Victron chargers.
The main function of this SI output is to charge a second, smaller battery, such as the starter battery of a vehicle or boat, while prioritizing the main battery.
Here’s how it works:
The charger first focuses entirely on charging the main battery (the 'service battery' or 'house battery' in an RV/boat).
Only when the main battery's voltage has reached a certain level will the charger pass a small current (usually around 1 to 3A) to the SI output.
This feature ensures that your most important battery is always fully charged before the charger begins maintaining a smaller, secondary battery.
